AbstractIn accordance with the first embodiment of the invention, a first and second tube body is provided, the first tube body resting upon the upper surface of the cover, the second tube body beneath the cover. The first and second tube bodies are plugged together at the ends to form a tubular spindle-core apparatus which is extended to traverse a buoyant flexible pool cover utilizing the buoyancy of the cover to be free-floating with the cover upon the surface of the water and within the perimeter of the pool. In the second embodiment, a single tube body which is octagonal is provided as a spindle-core to be secured upon a buoyant flexible pool cover utilizing clips of similar geometric shape where the octagonal spindle-core shape provides a seating for clipping the buoyant flexible cover to the spindle-core. In all cases the spindle-core is positioned within the pool to a desired location intermediate the ends of the pool cover being traversed, the apparatus being sufficiently supported by the buoyancy of the flexible pool cover and is independent of any other structure for support other than the pool cover upon the surface of the water. In accordance with the method, the operator lifts one end of the spindle-core apparatus and engages the crank handle by plugging the handle into the end, then rolling the buoyant cover on the surface of the water, both ends of the cover simultaneously being drawn into a roll by action of the cover folding back onto itself as the spindle-core is rotated by the operator. Unrolling is effected by positioning the ends of the cover off the roll upon the water, the operator rotating the roll in the opposite direction as the rolling operation, while both ends of the cover simultaneously glide outward upon the surface of the water to a fully extended position. | InventorApplicationNo. 760578 filed on 09/16/1991US Classes:4/502, On a roll242/388.1, Of centrally gripped material242/395, Manually rotatable crank or wheel242/407.1, Collapsible or knockdown242/919Ground cover (e.g., tarp)Field of Search242/395, Manually rotatable crank or wheel242/395.1, Foldable spool drive crank242/407, With particular spool242/407.1, Collapsible or knockdown242/546.1, Manual242/918, Web material (e.g., thermal insulation)4/502On a rollExaminersPrimary: Jillions, John M.Attorney, Agent or FirmUS Patent References739403, 1270188, 1322604, 1599966, 2350758, 2396451, 2565339, 2933262, 3425646, 3533572, 4281802, Thermal ice capIssued on: 08/04/1981 Inventor: Burley4311288, Strap winding mechanism Issued on: 01/19/1982 Inventor: Galland4324370, Pool cover roller assembly Issued on: 04/13/1982 Inventor: Guard , et al.4328930, Composite reel and stand for a swimming pool cover Issued on: 05/11/1982 Inventor: Kalendovsky4407027, Pool-cover apparatus and method Issued on: 10/04/1983 Inventor: Colon, Jr.4915320, Kite string reel Issued on: 04/10/1990 Inventor: Neal5107552Swimming pool cover and roll-up device Issued on: 04/28/1992 Inventor: Lavalliere, et al.
